November 26th to 29th we went to Busan in South-Korea. I got good experience in those four days. I was impressed by Korean students’ academic ability. I felt big difference between Korean students and Japanese students. I was learned a lot of things from Korean students.
November 27th, I have presented my research “Facial Feature Detection Using Color Information” at Pukyong National University. I had a confidence in my English because I have 765 points on the TOEIC test. But my confidence was broken by this time presentation. When I stood on the stage, my mind went blank and I could not think of words in English. So I was just read my manuscript on the stage. Therefore my presentation was the worst presentation. All Korean students’ English was very fluently contrasted with my English. Their presentations were perfect. I realized once again low level of my English skill.
November 28th, we went out to Busan city with Pukyong National University students. I was anxious at that time. I thought we can’t understand each other because I can’t speak English. Fortunately, one of Korean student Ju-Hyon can speak Japanese. He guided us in Japanese, so we could understand each other. We went to Busan Museum of Art, BEXCO(one of APEC 2005’s meeting places), Sinsegae department store(world’s largest department store), Busan Museum, and Gwangbokro Shopping Street. I tried to talk to Korean students in English positively. I understood what they are saying, but I couldn’t tell them my opinion. So finally, I rely on Ju-Hyon. End of this day, we exchanged email address each other. Now I continue keep in touch with them.
I often hear the word “age of globalization” in Japan. However, I never feel globalization in Japan. Through stayed four days in Busan, for the first time I realized meaning of “age of globalization”. At the same time, I realized Japan faces many crises. So Japanese have to study English rapidly. Otherwise Japan can’t win the world scale competitions. And Japan would be left behind other advanced countries. I think that is the start of Japan’s ruins. To survive in the globalized world, I want to study English more hard from now on. I strongly think that.
